Judges 2:8–13

Now lJoshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died when he was one hundred and ten years old. mAnd they buried him within the border of his inheritance at nTimnath Heres, in the mountains of Ephraim, on the north side of Mount Gaash. 10 When all that generation had 5been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who odid not know the Lord nor the work which He had done for Israel.

11 Then the children of Israel did pevil in the sight of the Lord, and served the Baals; 12 and they qforsook the Lord God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt; and they followed rother gods from among the gods of the people who were all around them, and they sbowed down to them; and they provoked the Lord to anger. 13 They forsook the Lord tand served 6Baal and the 7Ashtoreths.

10 After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel. 11 Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord and served the Baals. 12 They forsook the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshiped various gods of the peoples around them. They aroused the Lord’s anger 13 because they forsook him and served Baal and the Ashtoreths.

They had no personal experience with the Lord or with what he had done for Israel. 

11 The people of Israel did what the Lord considered evil. They began to serve other gods—the Baals. 12 The Israelites abandoned the Lord God of their ancestors, the God who brought them out of Egypt. They followed the other gods of the people around them. They worshiped these gods, and that made the Lord angry. 13 They abandoned the Lord to serve the god Baal and the goddess Astarte.

10 All of the people of Joshua’s time joined the members of their families who had already died. Then those who were born after them grew up. They didn’t know the Lord. They didn’t know what he had done for Israel.

11 The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. They served the gods that were named after Baal. 12 They deserted the Lord, the God of their people. He had brought them out of Egypt. But now the people of Israel followed other gods and worshiped them. They served the gods of the nations that were around them. They made the Lord angry 13 because they deserted him. They served Baal. They also served the goddesses that were named after Ashtoreth.
